Stress at Work – How Do I Cope

Anyone who has ever worked in a job has encountered stress in the workplace. This work stress can come in the form of pressures from your boss or stress from coworkers. Although many people are able to cope with with workplace stress, it is important to understand that when it effects your functioning, either on the job or in your personal life it is important that you learn how to manage the stress at work.

Chronic stress can result in anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. It can also contribute to health conditions such as depression, obesity, and heart disease. 

It is important to identify a plan to practice good coping skills to manage stress in the workplace. Make sure you take time for yourself throughout the day, even if it is for five minutes. You can practice relaxation skills right at your desk if you are able too. Also, make sure you set healthy boundaries and appropriate limits with coworkers. You may want to also speak with your supervisor to verbalize concerns about pressures or issues. Finally, on the way home from work, take this time to “decompress” by rolling down the windows and feeling the wind on your body and listening to relaxing music.
